How Chicago Area Sleep Medicine Center Helps Insomnia Suffers Get Relief Starts With An Evaluation

By Allan Bigarda

Insomnia is a condition that covers a number of sleep disorders. However, not all sleep disorders are characterized by the inability to doze off and remain asleep throughout the night. At the Chicago Insomnia Diagnostic facility, exhausted individuals are being tested and advised.

Upon arrival for the first appointment a medical history will be written. A physical examination will be done to rule out any physiologic condition that might account for the insomnia. After an evaluation, the sleep patterns can be monitored to do an in-depth analysis of the individuals problem.

The goal is to determine what is blocking the ability to sleep. It may be stress that causes someone to clench his teeth. Another factor preventing sleep may be restless leg syndrome. Then there are related disorders such as sleep apnea, which is a short interlude in which a person stops breathing for moments at irregular intervals.

Narcolepsy is a disorder in which the brain is unable to regulate the twenty-four hour cycles of darkness and light. The individual will be sleepy during the day and falls asleep suddenly in the middle of dinner or a conversation. This condition is a brain disorder not fully understood by the medical community.

In addition to the excessive sleepiness during the day it is typified by a sudden loss of muscle tone. This loss is called cataplexy. It can be triggered by an unexpected emotional response to something.

The behavior referred to as sleepwalking is mocked in cartoons and involves doing something while asleep and being unaware of it. There is an eating disorder that is related. The person walking around in a semi-conscious state eats large amounts of food. In some cases, non-food items such as cigarette butts and coffee grounds are consumed.

An overnight observation is conducted at the clinic to determine the cause of any one of these disorders. They are found in women more often than men. Unless resolved, insomnia can lead to dangerous episodes. In rare cases the individual may drive a car while asleep.
