It is adorable when the little tots start learning to stand in line and do a somersault one by one. Proud parents may dream of going to competitions one day. Classes progress from beginners to intermediate and at Ambler PA Childrens Gymnastics all the way to advanced.
The beginners level is focused only on the sheer fun of movement. Little kids hate to sit still. In this class they are encouraged to run, jump, hop on one foot and try to do something that resembles a cartwheel. Appreciation of their efforts encourages them to try over and over.
In intermediate classes they will not only do perfect somersaults and cartwheels, but other acrobatic tricks as well. All will be performed in a graceful way. Kids take pride in their advancing achievements.
Classes teach them to remember the names of the apparatus and acrobatic activities. There is an arabesque position which requires one leg to be extended behind the body at a 45 degree angle. A floor exercise is a series of tumbling runs interspersed with choreographed dance moves.
A balance beam is wooden and four inches in width. The girls perform acrobatics and hold some positions for a number of seconds to demonstrate control. A dismount varies, but must always land with both feet firmly on the floor.
For beginning students, the beam is placed slightly off the floor. The advanced students practice on one that is four feet higher than the floor. The competitions use the four-foot height.
Boys perform on a pommel horse. It is rectangular in shape with two handles, known as pommels. They do leg swings keeping the legs straight. They must have great upper-body strength and be capable of good control.
The older children in the advanced classes may enter competitions. Regional competitions are open only to those from specific countries. National competitions are open to those living in a specific country. The advanced students compete at a high-school and college level. Those classified as elite are talented enough to dream of some day going to compete in the Olympics.
