Deep Hole Drilling Machines And The Industries They Are Used In

By Tim Uphaus

Gun drills are the most accurate, fast and capable type of drills that manage to cut deep holes on metal materials through a controlled release of highly compressed fluids. Those drills are the only ones that can bore holes of depth to diameter ratios of about 350.

Around this fluted rod that is essentially the drill, circulates the coolant that keeps drilling temperatures below melting point for both the drill and the workpiece while the chips that are produced from the process flow outside the drilled hole.

Attributes

The tip of the gun drill itself is the point that is called to withstand the deformation forces generated by the extreme pressures. For this reason, gun drill manufacturers choose the strongest metal alloys and composite materials that stay unaffected by intense pressure and sudden temperature changes for many years of operation.

The speed of gun drill machines is one of the strongest characteristics of this tool as high speed drills can bore steel at a rate of 75 cm per minute or even more depending on the diameter. The most significant advantage of deep hole drilling machines, though, is the extreme accuracy with which they can cut through hardened metals. These tools can achieve an astonishing finishing that rarely needs further polishing.

Uses

Gun Barrels Making

The most obvious use scenario for the gun drilling machines is for the drilling of gun barrels, which is where this specialized tool got its name from. Gun drills are ideal for the boring of such long holes into rigid metal materials.

The accurate cutting of gun drills makes it possible for very intricate metalwork and produces a smooth finishing on the inner side of the barrel that rarely even needs any polishing at all. This is especially important for guns as bullets that travel at very high speeds could have their trajectory affected by even the slightest deviation.

Creating Molds

Another case of gun drilling machine application is for the manufacturing of molds that are suitable for the production of metal parts or tools. In this case, gun drills are especially useful as the molten material may have to be inserted through a relatively long hole and into the casting mold.

Manufacturing Tools

Hardened tools made out of chromium and vanadium steel can only be successfully processed by high precision tools among which are gun drills. These are ideal for boring deep holes that can be used for the fitting of extensions and adapters. Usually, these are done in a polygonal shape to increase the torque friction.

Musical Instruments

Last, there is the musical instrument industry that requires high precision machinery to achieve certain tonal results out of wind instruments. These can be flutes, clarinets, oboes, saxophones, ocarinas, reeds, bassoons and trumpets, as they all include deep holes of great finishing. Although the soft materials that wind instruments are usually made out of don't require the sheer cutting power of other applications, the cutting precision required can only be met by gun drill machines.
